ISO 45001:2018- Occupational Health & Safety

ISO 45001:2018 is an international standard that specifies the requirements for an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). It provides a framework for organizations to proactively improve occupational health and safety (OH&S) performance, prevent work-related injuries and ill-health, and create safe and healthy workplaces.

Here are the key aspects of ISO 45001:2018:

Scope and Context: Organizations are required to establish and maintain an OHSMS that is appropriate to their context, size, nature, and complexity. This includes considering the needs and expectations of workers and other interested parties, as well as the organization’s legal and regulatory requirements.

Leadership and Worker Participation: ISO 45001:2018 emphasizes the importance of leadership commitment to OH&S and the active participation of workers in the OHSMS. Top management is expected to demonstrate leadership and accountability for OH&S performance, establish an OH&S policy, and ensure the involvement of workers in OH&S matters.

Planning: Organizations are required to identify and assess OH&S hazards and risks, determine applicable legal and other requirements, and establish objectives and targets for improving OH&S performance. This includes developing plans and processes to eliminate or minimize hazards and risks, as well as prepare for emergency situations.

Support and Operation: ISO 45001:2018 requires organizations to provide the necessary resources, competencies, training, and awareness to support the effective operation of the OHSMS. This includes establishing communication channels, consultation processes, and mechanisms for worker participation in OH&S decision-making.

Performance Evaluation: Organizations are expected to monitor, measure, analyze, and evaluate their OH&S performance regularly. This includes conducting internal audits, performing incident investigations, and assessing compliance with legal and other requirements. Organizations must also ensure the participation of workers in performance evaluation activities.

Improvement: ISO 45001:2018 emphasizes the importance of continual improvement in OH&S performance. Organizations are required to take corrective actions to address nonconformities and prevent recurrence, as well as implement preventive actions to eliminate or minimize OH&S risks and hazards.

ISO 45001:2018 follows the High-Level Structure (HLS), making it compatible with other ISO management system standards, such as ISO 9001:2015 (quality management) and ISO 14001:2015 (environmental management).
